There is a subtle addictive quality to mini greenhouses. When you stand inside a tiny glass or plastic enclosure while frost forms outside, you may think you have outwitted the seasons. Perhaps it’s easier than that. Plants continue to grow even when everything else appears to be worn out, which is a small victory in itself.
Over the years, mini greenhouses have evolved from being awkward garden accessories to becoming more and more necessary equipment, particularly for those who have unusually shaped patios, balconies, or backyards. The term “mini” has always seemed ambiguous to me. A two-foot wooden grow box can seem surprisingly generous when filled with seedlings, while a 6×4 aluminum structure can still feel compact.
Most people are familiar with walk-in compact greenhouses, which are smaller versions of something you might see at a nursery. There is a charm to them that is useful. As soon as you enter, unzip the front, you’re in a completely different climate. A warmer day. Humidity is a little high. It can occasionally be a little too warm if you don’t vent it. An unexpectedly bright afternoon makes it hard to ignore how quickly the temperature rises.
Next, we have the wooden mini greenhouses. Typically, these gardens attract a different type of gardener, one who is more concerned with aesthetics than productivity. When arranged neatly against a wall, they resemble furniture, and are often painted or left unpainted. Despite this, they are effective. With seed trays piled on movable shelves and light condensation forming against the panels, it’s a tiny, contained ecosystem. Nevertheless, it’s possible that people are unaware of how much care these require. Particularly, ventilation becomes an everyday chore.
Portable plastic greenhouses are on the other end of the spectrum. Because they are affordable, lightweight, and sometimes unsteady in high winds, they are frequently used by novices. There is a perception that they are short-term fixes, but that isn’t entirely true. Despite inclement weather, some endure remarkably well when securely fastened. Less than $50 changes expectations. Rather than purchasing permanence, you are purchasing opportunity.
The importance of cold frames cannot be overstated, despite the fact that they are frequently overlooked. Because they’re low to the ground, have a straightforward structure, and are simple to construct or purchase, they don’t look like much. Despite their size, however, they subtly extend the growing season. Watching young plants harden off inside one and gradually adapt to outdoor conditions can be strangely satisfying.
There has been a recent trend toward vertical mini greenhouses, which are tall, narrow structures with tiered shelving. It is evident that these are designed for urban areas where height is available but floor space is limited. You can stack strawberries, herbs, and seedlings effectively. The logic reflects the upward, not outward, growth of cities.
Using reclaimed windows or PVC piping, some gardeners make their own arrangements. Some of these structures are flawed, uneven, or assembled in a way that wouldn’t pass a design review. They are, however, effective. That has a certain honesty to it. It doesn’t have to look perfect in order to be effective.
In recent years, however, people’s use of these areas has changed. Mini greenhouses are no longer just used to keep plants alive during the winter. Expanding ambition is the key. Cultivation of citrus in colder climates. It is a good idea to plant seedlings earlier than the calendar indicates. A wardrobe-sized building can even create microclimates within it.
The idea that minor improvements have a disproportionate impact is also becoming more widely accepted. Seedling trays can be prevented from wilting by automatic vents that open silently when the temperature rises. The right greenhouse bubble wrap can slightly alter nighttime temperatures to prevent frost damage. Despite the fact that these are not significant changes, they are nonetheless important.
However, it isn’t entirely effortless. It is exaggerated to say that. Mini greenhouses require regular attention in small doses. When you forget to open a vent, things overheat. Mold will grow if you ignore the humidity. It’s a balancing act on a smaller scale.
When it works, it truly works. Late-winter seedlings in a tray. After the outside world has slowed down, herbs continue to grow. Going outside on a chilly morning, opening a plastic door, and discovering that life continues.
Although it is difficult to pinpoint, mini greenhouses seem to be more about perseverance than gardening. I don’t mean in a big, dramatic way. Simple, everyday actions. Vent modification. Watering a tray. Taking a temperature reading.
Perhaps that’s why they’re so popular. Excellence is not guaranteed by them. Just enough control is provided to keep things from expanding when they should not.
